Why I'm Walking – For Justice, Safety, and for People Who Are Too Often Ignored

Hi, I’m Rima. 👋

I am the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at JLI and a member of the senior leadership team, providing strategic direction and executive oversight of JLI’s financial management, human resources, and operational systems. I oversee risk management across legal, audit, insurance, and compliance functions, and advise the CEO and Board on financial and operational strategies that support JLI’s mission.

Through my work with JLI, I see how local communities and faith actors have knowledge, experience and ideas that matter, but do not always have access to the places where decisions are made. Sometimes what is missing is a connection: a way for the voice of someone in a local community in East Africa, for example, to reach people sitting in Washington, DC. That's part of what JLI tries to make possible. And that is why I am walking.

On September 25, you can be part of that journey. Walk a mile with me in DC, walk wherever you are, share this page, or support the campaign with a donation. Together, we can go the extra mile so that more voices are heard.

Why I’m Walking (10-12 Miles Across Washington, D.C.)

I know what it means to come from communities whose voices are not always heard. I grew up between different countries and cultures, including Yemen, Ethiopia, Belgium and the United States. Those experiences shaped how I see the world and why I care about creating opportunities for people and communities who are too often overlooked.

On September 25, I'll be walking 10–12 miles through Washington, DC as my contribution to the 100-Mile Campaign.
I've been part of JLI since 2018, and over those years the organization has become much more than a place where I work. I've grown with JLI, and JLI has become part of who I am today. That's one reason this walk is personal to me. But there is another reason.

Walking Route – Washington, D.C.

I live in the Washington, DC area. I have access to people, organizations and institutions here, and I want to use that access to help amplify voices that deserve to be heard.

I will begin at George Washington University Metro, crossing Key Bridge into Georgetown University, then heading to the DC National Mall, and ending at Smithsonian Station.
